" As part of our curriculum, students are required to master the art of writing in a variety of genres for various audiences. I am constantly looking for ways to make this task meaningful to my students, keeping my eye open for authentic opportunities for them to write. Upon reflecting on what we have already accomplished, I realized what a fantastic opportunity it would be for my students to practice persuasive writing by composing their own proposal for desired classroom materials right here on Donorschoose.org. As a result of writing for a real purpose, for a real audience, students will in turn be more excited about what they have accomplished and see the influence their writing can have on others. So, without further ado, I will now turn this proposal over to my extremely talented students.

I am a sixth grade student in Joplin, Missouri. In our sixth grade Reading, Communication Arts, and Social Studies class, we need more books to read. Books can explain stuff and help us to become better readers and writers. If we become better readers and writers, we can go on to become teachers, doctors, and lawyers.

We need books that are so good we don’t want to put them down, and make us feel like we’re right on the edge of our seats; award winning books, mysteries, and fairy tales to stretch our imagination. Historical fiction and chapter books would be good for students with higher reading levels that want something challenging, while learning about history at the same time. We have good books in the classroom, but most of them aren’t very long chapter books. There are a few big books, but what if someone doesn’t like the choices of those? Or, they already read the one that sounds most interesting to them. They need more challenging books.

If you generously fund this proposal, we could use these books during independent reading, or anytime when someone finishes their work early. We can also check these items out from the classroom library and take them home with us to read. They will be used all the time, in and out of school. The benefits being that we will learn from these books and if we learn, we will share with others, and they will tell others, and this knew knowledge could go on forever!

The chapter books will help us learn new words, get a bigger vocabulary, and raise our reading levels. They will help us learn and grow as students. We will become excited about the new knowledge we will get from these books and share with others. Not to mention that these books will also be used by students that will come to this classroom after we leave. Your donation will continue to give into the future. We are the future!

So, there you have it. What could be more powerful to a student for their own writing come to life? Thank you for taking the time to consider this request.

As you have read, my students are requesting outstanding, quality books for our classroom library to use during independent reading, literacy centers and take home reading. The cost of this proposal is $263, which includes shipping for any materials requested and fulfillment ?."

Dear Trevor and Anonymous Donors,
I can not thank you enough for your generous donation. The students are beside themselves knowing that it was their own writing that inspired someone to donate materials to our classroom. This has been one of the most powerful lessons that I have ever taught. Your thoughtfulness will last for years to come.
Thank you again,
Mrs. H

On Apr 7, 2008, Mrs. H. followed this note with student letters sent via mail to the donor who completed this project, and to donors who gave $100 or more.
