Building a Sports Program at CCSC: The Clock is Ticking

Our student-athletes need a portable scoreboard for practices and games.

The Community Charter School is off to a successful start. Students are academically pushed throughout the school day in ways that many were unaccustomed to prior to enrolling. CCSC is striving to help low-income, at risk students from the surrounding communities, overcome the odds, graduate and head off to four-year colleges, adequately prepared for the challenges ahead. CCSC has also committed itself to showing students that sports can be an important and worthwhile component of the high school experience. With only 240 students, more than 65 boys and girls tried out for slots on the two varsity basketball teams, despite the time commitment, energy and on top of their school work. For four months, students give themselves over to basketball , attending 7AM practices, rising early during the dark, cold winter and making their way to the gym. CCSC uses 20 minutes away from school for the only time slot available. We are striving to reward the commitment of these student-athletes (none of whom can play without passing grades in every subject) by creating a full-fledged sports program in which all students can participate, take pride and use to showcase their passion for sports and school. Currently, we do not have a scoreboard or clock for use during practice. The portable scoreboard proposed would help coaches and players simulate game conditions and further legitimizing the entire experience. This scoreboard would help convince CCSC students of our serious sense of purpose . We believe sports is integral in their healthy development. It would better prepare the boys and girls varsity teams for competition. Both currently play a full schedule of games. With your help, CCSC can continue to demonstrate its commitment to our growing sports program. We can convince students of the importance of participation and commitment. We can prepare our athletes for competition and, of course, continue to provide valuable lessons. So many of us growing up had the opportunity to participate on successful, serious organized sports teams.
