My students need photo paper and ink, metallic paint, and five unitards for set design to perform the opera. We need books to visualize Native Americans to create myths.

My students are fantastic, fabulous fourth graders! We are learning about myths, legends, and folktales from China, Native America, Ireland, and Africa to perform in an opera. Students will create their own myth, legend, and folktale to aid in this process.
We are an urban elementary school with over 98% of students at the poverty level.
We received the strongest rating from a recent survey by a distinguished university that evaluated all schools in our urban district in relation to parent involvement, administration leadership, and teachers developing rigorous instruction. We need your help to increase achievement. Only a few students are on grade level for Reading, so we need tools to boost achievement and conquer the rigor of Common Core standards.
Through my unit, "Myths and Legends From Around the World", students will learn about myths and legends from around the world; the moral of the stories and why they are important. Students will use the copy paper and photo paper to create an original writing for the opera. Students will use the Native American book to learn about its culture. We will use unitards to help create costumes and then use them to perform an opera. We will design a set using paint and flags from each culture. We won a grant from the Lyric Opera of Chicago and will create and perform an opera using the student created myths and legends in it. Students will learn about different cultures and events happening in those countries. The class will then compile myths and legends into a book like Aesop Fables.
Students will learn why myths and legends are an important part of each culture.
I have asked a spoken word artist and a dance teacher to come to my fourth grade classroom to enrich my students' learning. We want to show the students how other cultures speak and dance. I want my students to have an authentic cultural experience while creating the opera.
