Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"Outside a dog, a book is man's best friend, inside a dog, it's too dark to read." Groucho Marx had it right...and my students are discovering what a wonderful friend a good book can be. In order to develop a love of reading and true literacy among our young students, we need to expose them to content-rich and appealing books. This proposal provides novel texts such as The Great Wall of China and A Red Riding Hood Story from China that are an important piece of a year long curriculum plan for a 3rd/4th grade class of Academically Gifted students. Though we are a Title 1 school with an inner-city location, my students are striving to achieve! My overall plan will develop cultural literacy through lessons that focus on strong content strands of US History. Materials for this proposal provide the language arts novel text for studying Chinese culture. These books were chosen because of their strong cross-curricular potential and award winning status. It will also be a literary focal point of discussions on racism, tolerance, family and relationships. By integrating social studies and language arts, we will address the knowledge deficit of our students which in turn will strengthen reading levels and vocabulary. Positive growth will be reflected in results on End of Grade standardized testing.
