Have you ever heard "Pachelbel's Canon" played in harmony by five-year-olds with handbells? I want to! I teach classroom music to grades Kindergarten through sixth. Since my services are provided by our PTA, the instruments I teach with are usually whatever I have at home, and I try to use group-friendly things like rhythm sticks. Recently I purchased a set of eight handbells, and they are an exciting addition to our music curriculum. The handbells are very child-appropriate, durable, color-coded, and play in tune with a clear tone. Students play songs using one bell apiece, while following handmade charts, which develop reading and tracking skills.

Unfortunately, with only eight bells, my students must wait for 20-30 children to share in order to take a turn to play one during a lesson. Instead of making music together as a group, they end up exercising their patience muscles more than their musical skills.

We simply need more bells! Two sets of 20 chromatic bells will supply us with at least the potential to include every student in the music-making process. And for those who are still developing their eye-hand coordination, the option of using a couple of djembe drums is also appealing.

Your donation will make it possible for my students to experience the joy of playing and hearing harmonious, beautiful sounds with a minimum of technical skill. With your gift, you help them to realize the power of group unity, and confidence in their ability to contribute as individuals. And I will relish the chance to hear the Canon emanating from my classroom!
