Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a early childhood special education preschool teacher. My students are from a low social economic background with needs in all areas. There are no typical peers and students are delayed in at least two of five categories to qualify for early intervention.

Ninety percent of my students are English Language learners and are delayed in two or more areas of development. In working with them, they seem to learn faster and with greater ease when we use hands on activities which allow them to learn with more than one modality. Unfortunately, our school is unable to provide the needed and necessary materials to create a literacy rich environment.

Due to the varying exceptionalities of my students and the different ways that they all learn, I need different materials for different students. For example, my visually impaired students would benefit from tactile materials. I have low-functioning students that would benefit from the magnetic ABC puzzle. My classroom also needs hands on literacy activities to learn the pre-reading skills to begin to give them a basis to succeed in kindergarten. This will help students by providing multiple learning opportunities as many of them learn in different ways. I want to be able to provide them materials in the areas they are strongest in.

Your help will ensure that my students will be given the opportunity to attain pre-reading skills required to succeed in school. By building a positive learning experience while they are young you will have created a lifelong learner.
