Tortoise Beats Hare In Special Ed Science

My students need a 55 gallon aquarium, two heat lamps and five bags of sphagnum moss to get our aquarium started for our tortoise.

Help my special education classroom learn the importance of care taking. I teach a high school special education science classroom. Most students that are in my room are there for the entire four years of high school.

Most of my students live with a single, working parent at or below the poverty line. The majority of them have never had a pet or understand the responsibility of taking care of a living thing.

I would like to bring a hatchling Red-Footed Tortoise into the room to remedy this problem. All my students would then work together to care for and raise the tortoise. The students would get to watch the growth and progression of the tortoise from year to year. We will be able to use this opportunity to do projects as well as scientific research using measurements and other tools to monitor the tortoise. Students will connect with each other and form bonds over nurturing the tortoise as well as learning together. Students will be responsible for varying jobs such as cleaning the aquarium and feeding the tortoise. As these jobs alternate students will get a better view of all the aspects of caring for a living thing.

Your help will make it possible for my students to get a first hand experience that they may never have again. Many of my students will spend their entire lives in group homes and will never be allowed the responsibility of a pet, and surely not a rare pet such as a Red-Foot Tortoise. Please donate to our Tortoise fund in order my enable my students to find the care and responsibility needed to raise a tortoise.
