I teach language arts and social studies to a diverse group of urban students--African-American, Asian, Latino, Caucasian, special education, English Language Learners, and honors students.
Although teachers in our local private schools have access to online libraries, Power Point, homework websites, and email communication with families, teachers at my public school do not. Recently, I attended a school-wide workshop on Internet resources for the classroom. But, without a laptop computer, I cannot take advantage of these. While most of my students' families prefer email communication, they are disappointed to learn that I do not have a laptop to facilitate reaching them after work hours. A laptop will enable me to use the incredible primary source websites now available on the Internet. I will be able to reach parents by email on a daily basis, and maintain a homework help website. And, when necessary, I'll be able to enhance lessons with visual aids--including online "tours" when we're studying ancient Egypt or China, and live web-talks from experts in Washington, D.C. A computer is not a replacement for the meat of language arts and social studies learning: reading, analyzing, discussing, writing, re-writing, and hopefully even discovering the power and importance of a great book. But your donation of one laptop will certainly make it possible for me to be a more successful teacher in this high tech world. And that will translate into many engaged, more successful students. My students need 1 notebook computer.
