Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach on the northwest side of Chicago in a Preschool for All classroom. The majority of my students speak Spanish and are three, four and five years old. My students attend school for a half day.

In my classroom I try to create a language rich experience, during story time I often read a book in English and Spanish. I love to use felt story pieces, puppets and big books to engage the students in stories. Because so many of my students are in the process of learning English these tools allow them to interact with the stories and understand them more easily. They also allow my students to retell the stories on their own helping to develop speaking skills and early literacy skills. I love to hear my students say " I like that book", or " Read it again". I feel that these actives improve students understanding of the stories we are studying.

I would like to provide more opportunities for this type of learning in my classroom. I would like for my students to be able to act out stories with felt pieces during group time and free play time. I would also like to provide some big books so that my students could more easily see the text and pictures when we are reading. Our story time would be more engaging if I had storytelling puppets, felt pieces and big books for my classroom. These tools would help my student's favorite stories come to life.

By donating felt story pieces, puppets and big books my students literacy skills will be increased. My students will be able to retell favorite stories, see stories more clearly and develop their speaking skills. I know that these supplies will greatly enrich group time and make story time come to life.
