Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Teaching is my passion. I have been at the same school for 17 years. I have come to love the families that I work with. I have 30 students in my classroom, 21 of whom are Hispanic. English is not their first language. To my knowledge, all of my kids are on free lunch except for one who is on reduced lunch.

This year we had a lot of rain and so my classroom has flooded several times leaving behind mud and sludge. The mud and sludge was extracted from my carpet and I have sprayed it with a lot of Lysol but I worry my carpet is not healthy for my kids. It definitely looks the worse for wear! My district has corrected the flooding problem but is not replacing the carpet because I bought the current carpet myself as a remnant at a discount carpet store. I like the carpet I selected at Donors Choose because it will hold up well and gives each child their own individual space. I can also call them to line up etc. by color rows. My parents love their children and want the best for them but they are unable to help. Most are barely able to get by.

We use the carpet all the time. We have calendar, news, story time, centers and learning games on the carpet. I switch my kids back and forth from the tables to the carpet so my kids don't get so antsy. The carpet gives us a place to come together.

Your help will give us a place to meet and learn together. Kindergarten kids need to move to learn and the carpet gives them a place to do that. My kids go to school in an old building and use old furniture and a bright new carpet would make our room more cheerful. So many of my kids come on the first day scared, crying and can not speak English. The carpet would make the space more inviting.
