Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love hands-on observational activities. They are very curious and enjoying learning through new experiences. I am looking to create some indoor gardening opportunities in our special education classroom to enhance our science skills and our writing through documenting our observations.
I teach in a low income community in the city.
My students have limited access to nature and green space even when the weather is cooperating. I currently teach in a self-contained special education classroom with 15 students ranging from grades K-3.
My students are very curious and enjoy hands-on activities. I presently have two house plants in my classroom and their favorite classroom job is watering the plants. My students show great respect for my classroom and all of our learning materials. I know they would take great pride in a classroom garden.
My Project
It is important to me to find "real world" and engaging activities that appeal to a wide variety of learners. For this project I am requesting a hydrofarm indoor growing system that includes a grow light, heat mat, moisture meter, timer, an ant farm, a root view garden and some books to help develop an indoor gardening unit plan.
Gardening is easily accessible to my unique learners because it provides an opportunity for hands-on learning through exploration and experimentation. Activities in the garden can be adapted for various skill levels and allow children to connect with nature and each other in unique and important ways. With these materials my students will be able to learn about life cycles and responsibility through taking care of our plants and watching them grow. They will also have the opportunity to enhance their writing skills through making observations and documenting them while our plants grow.
My students have limited opportunities to explore and appreciate nature.
By bringing the outdoors indoors my students will have the opportunity to develop an appreciation for nature and they things it provides us. They will be able to start seeds in the classroom and take them home to share with their families. Students will feel empowered by their ability to make improvements to their environment and community.
