In schools around the nation, all of the arts have been undervalued and underfunded. My school has been working with the Museum of Children's Art, Luna Kids Dance, and music providers in order to create an enriched program of learning through the arts. However, despite our greatest efforts, we find that we frequently end up without the most essential pieces of the programs because of the way our school is laid out. Art is particularly important on our campus because about 75% of our student population has been diagnosed with Autism or a Speech/Language Impairment. In providing the arts, we are attempting to provide three alternative means of communcation for these students: music, dance, and visual art.

Our school is a combination of condemned portables, a small building, and down the hill, portables that are in serious disrepair. It has changed from a separate K-8 and preschool to preschool-3rd grade in the space of a few years. Classrooms are scattered across a hill and to get from one side of the campus to the other it requires passing through three separate gates and a building. For the teachers of visual art, who do not have their own classrooms, this becomes a dangerous and difficult trek for each class because it is necessary to carry materials and supplies for all the students from room to room since not every teacher has their own supply of each medium being explored.

An art cart and supply caddy would solve this problem easily. It would be much easier to organize all of the supplies into kits for each teacher in a central location where they could be retrieved by the individual teachers before their assigned art classes. The art teacher would then only be required to carry a demonstration of the project to be done between classes.

By supporting our arts program you will be making it easier for arts providers to work in our school, since we do not have it in our budget at this time to allow them a full time classroom in which to store their materials and to teach from. With your help we can make a more engaging learning environment for our children.
