Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"One who dares to teach must never cease to learn"; and that includes teachers using technology in our classrooms. I teach English in an urban high school just outside of Hollywood. The students at Marshall High School are low income with about 75% of the students on the free lunch program. Two of my classes are Sheltered English which means my students score far below basic on state tests. My students come from low income neighborhoods. Coming from immigrant families, the students have little access to resources and/or their parents don't know how to advocate for their child's educational needs. Higher income areas have the resources for technology in their learning. Because my students are low income and high need as far as differentiation goes, an LCD projector is a tool that can really make a difference in my teaching and more importantly, in the student's learning.

Built in 1931, the school I work at is obviously not the most technologically inclined. Because of this, our rooms are not equipped with digital projectors. We can check them out, but there are far fewer than the amount of teachers we have (235 total). As a matter of fact, many teachers don't even have a functioning overhead projector. You know those, the old fashioned kind that use plastic transparencies that are messy, not provided by the school, not to mention bad for the environment.

I would really love to have a digital projector available as a daily resource in my classroom. When teaching, it is very helpful to have access to diagrams in color and access to the web for all to see. Additionally, it is extremely helpful in modeling writing styles and grammar techniques for the classroom. Right now we simply have a white board, which although nice, does not lend itself to user friendly learning or teaching. In this digital age, our students must have access to technology in all aspects of their learning.

The donation of a digital projector will ensure that the students in my classes have access to technology that enhances learning and motivates students to learn and grow. In this digital age it is clear that a classroom without usable technology is a classroom that is failing students.
