Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The CICS Northtown film club needs your help! The film club is a group of highly motivated students who are interested in acting, script writing, directing, filming, and creating special effects. They collaborate with other student organizations to create promotional videos advertising special events at school and record important school events. Unfortunately our film club, while full of talented artists, is missing an essential tool: the club does not own a single camcorder. We are currently dependent on the generosity of one club member who allows us to use his personal camcorder. When he graduates this Spring, the film club will not have access to any filming equipment. I am an English/Writing teacher and moderator of the film club at CICS Northtown Academy, the second-highest ranked charter school in Chicago. Northtown serves predominantly underprivileged Latino and African-American populations of the west side. As a charter school, we only receive 80% of the funding that public Chicago schools receive, and as such, we must rely heavily on private donations. Our students work hard to be successful both in and out of school, and I would hate to see this talented group of students lose out on an opportunity to explore their artistic interests because our club cannot afford the equipment it needs. The film club needs a camcorder so that our aspiring film students can strengthen their skills by producing original, collaborative films. Additionally, the camcorder would benefit the entire student body by helping us record the events of the school year. This is my first year moderating the film club, and I have been continually impressed by the creativity and dedication of the club’s members. If the club had its own camcorders, they would provide the students with so many fantastic opportunities to hone their artistic skills and explore their interests in film making.
