I teach Health Education in an urban districts. I am also a Family Advocate to twenty other students in an urban high school throughout our small learning community whom I will mentor until they graduate from high school. Many of my students think it is "cute" to have a baby, and they have the unrealistic view that raising a child will prove that they can give and receive unconditional "love" without thinking about the consequences of sexual activity in their adolescent years. My Simulated Baby Program offers the most realistic parenting simulation available. Teens are able to experience the emotional, social, and financial demands of parenting. It requires the students to care for a Real Care Baby by actually feeding, burping, rocking, and changing him/her. A photo scrapbook will capture some of these experiences.

Teaching students about this topic provides teens with the opportunity to recognize the consequences of a behavior in order to evaluate the real-life effects. A photo scrapbook will wipe those "cute" expressions away! Once my students take these simulated babies, monitored by a computer, home for the weekend (and they are easier than the "real babies"), hopefully they will think twice about engaging in sexual activity, and realize the only sure way to not be a teen parent is to be abstinent. A photo of my students with the baby before they take him/her home will show students with smiles on their faces because in the beginning they are so "cute". A photo of my students with the baby when they return him/her from their weekend will show how happy they are to return the baby which probably kept them up all night and could not keep them quiet. Expressions on their faces in a photo when the results on the computer show possible mishandling, shaken baby, neglect, too much babysitting, not feeding properly, not changing properly, and too much crying will be a reminder of consequences of being a teen parent. While taking care of their "baby", an hourly journal must be kept.

Teens are very emotional. Facial expressions describe just how emotional teens can be. A photo that they can keep will remind them of the experience of being a teen parent and not being able to take a crying baby to a basketball game, a dance, a movie, or on a crowded bus. "Before" and "after" facial expressions with comments in a scrap book that they will keep will be a permanent reminder. Students would also be photographed carrying their baby in the standard carrying seat (which is not very light) walking home. My students walk to school, and the mode of transportation in their school district is using the public bus. A photo scrapbook will include a journal of their activities and experiences as well as research on financial responsibility and a shopping list. A digital camera will capture the memories of the obstacles they had to endure as a teen parent both when they share experiences with their peers and in their personal journals with photos of their "babies".

"Students remember only 10 percent of what they read; 20 percent of what they hear; 30 percent, if they see visuals related to what they are hearing; 50 percent, if they watch someone do something while explaining it; but almost 90 percent, if they do the job themselves even if only as a simulation" (Gokhale, A). Capturing photo memories of "teen parenthood" in a photo scrapbook and writing about their experiences as teen parents will be a part of my students' education that is rarely taught in most high schools. Hopefully one day after they have completed their education, they will be able to look back at their photo scrapbook and know that made responsible choices and decisions in their life.
