Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Loud classes are not always bad. My Spanish classes are usually some of the most active in the building, but it's because the students are engaged and practicing the language that they are learning. I teach Spanish 1 & 2 to High School Students in NYC to grades 10-12. It is a small school with really dedicated staff members, but not always enough funding for fun activities.

Over the past four years of my teaching, the students always show an interest in culture. We learn about the different countries, watch videos, evaluate customs, and describe food. Each year the students always ask, why don't we eat the food instead of just talking about it. The problem is even in the teachers' lounge there isn't a refrigerator or a microwave making food days a big obstacle.

Each month, I plan on having a "food day" where students or I bring in traditional food to share with the classes that I teach and to really teach them about Hispanic Cuisine. The small refrigerator and microwave will make it possible to keep food in the school so that all the classes will benefit from this ongoing project.

Many of these students do not try things beyond their comfort zone and I don't think that they would try this food unless it was provided for them in a safe environment. This ongoing project will really make my Spanish classroom come alive for my students. I think they will have more confidence to try new things in general and learn more about different cultures. This DonorsChoose project will have an impact on my students for many years to come. Muchas Gracias for your consideration!
