I am employed as an occupational therapist in a NYC special education public school. The students are middle school age. Their disabilities include mild to moderate developmental delays and autism.

I have created a successful drum band with my students. Included in the band are my students of autism. Through my training as an occupational therapist, my focus for these students is to teach or improve grasp, fine motor skills, motor planning, visual tracking, eye hand coordination, two handed coordination, hand eye coordination, flexion and extension, and social skills. The students need adaptive musical instruments in order to participate in the group band. Through exposure to the band they have shown great enthusiasm and expressed a desire to play music with their friends in the band!

There is a limited amount of adaptive musical instruments within our music program. Offering the students the opportunity to play in the band will provide them with a chance to improve their self confidence and peer interaction. It affords them an opportunity to participate in a community environment, and generalize their skills to other social and work environments.
