Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Literacy involves a continuum of learning to enable an individual to achieve his or her goals. I currently teach third grade at a public school in California. Our district is currently in year three of program improvement because it has failed to meet its annual yearly progress as indicated by the state of California in the content area of Language Arts. Operation Literacy is an opportunity for students to develop the language to read, write, listen, and speak with the use of technology tools that will help students and community members take part in reading and writing at a level adequate for communication in a literate society.

Students need the tools and resources to develop their knowledge and full potential in order to participate in a wider society. Illiteracy is a social problem that can be solved through education and technology rich reading programs like my classroom's personal podcasting reading program entitled Operation Literacy. Students have shown decreased interest and decreased test scores in schools around the country and around the world in the areas of reading and writing because of the lack of motivation, engagement, and the resources necessary to enrich and improve their learning. By tapping into how students think and process information fundamentally in today's society where they have grown up with the digital tools that have been an integral part of their lives, it seems only appropriate for teachers to teach and reach students with devices that will foster achievement, mastery and literacy. We need to reconsider the current old school methodology and "legacy content" that is no longer serving individual needs, and introduce "future content" that is interesting and motivating to today's students.

By purchasing materials and resources for the classroom that is digital and technological, future content will be increasingly interesting and easier for students to understand, identify, create, interpret, compute, and communicate. My classroom needs five iPods (nano video iPods) for students to create audio podcasts that will be posted on our classroom website for students and community members to listen, read, write, reflect, respond, and enhance their literacy and learning. This funding will better serve my students, school, and community members by fostering a love for reading, and will help students retain language that is necessary for participation, socialization, and communication in today's society. Students will enhance their learning by developing fluency, intonation, comprehension, and expression with these terrific technology tools.

Please help fund our literacy project and you will definitely help make a difference in the classroom, the community, and in every culture around the world.
