I teach 1st grade in a K-3 public school in MS. Our school serves a large number of at risk students.

The title of my grant refers to building sentences. This is a crucial skill for developing writers. Students need a lot of hands on practice in understanding what makes a sentence as well as materials to practice writing sentences and stories.

I have found several items which would give my students practice in sentence construction and correction as well as practice in writing. These items include a couple of pocket chart kits which could be used with whole groups, small groups or individual students to build and/or correct sentences. Other materials requested include writing journals, handwriting paper and a writing center which has a variety of prompts, some picture dictionaries and editing cards to help students with their writing. With these materials, students will not only have more practice writing good sentences, but also practice at using those sentences to write stories and put their thoughts on paper.

Mississippi is famous for producing outstanding writers. With your donation you can partner with me in giving a head start to the next Eudora Welty or John Grisham.
