Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students learn at different rates. Teaching the whole class the same thing, the same way, at the same time, will always leave some students lost and others bored. It is essential that teachers differentiate activities for students so that the kids can learn how they learn best.
My students come from many different backgrounds.
Sixty percent of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. We are a majority minority school. Eighty percent of our students are minorities and many of them are first generation Americans. Some of our students come to our school with very little education at all, while others are on track to finish their first year college coursework in our high school. The diversity is amazing; our strength and our challenge.
My Project
My students need work tables that they can use when working in small groups, at different activity stations or just when they need a break to work by themselves. Because my students come from so many different backgrounds, they are often at different places in their education. Differentiation is difficult in a small classroom with 30 or more students. Having small tables where students can work in small groups will help them work at their own paces and achieve success at their own rates. We will be able to move the tables to different areas for different activities so that each student will be able to work on specific weaknesses or expand their strengths. I also plan to have the students design the tops of the tables and paint their designs to incorporate their artistic ideas with their scientific interests. Because these tables are wood, new students will be able to redesign them every year.
Having small tables that can be moved to different areas will help my students do activities in small groups where they can learn from each other and at their specific levels.
We can also use the tables to set up different stations with different activities so that students can work at their own paces, and learn in many different ways. Students will also be able to paint the tables with their own ideas, expanding their scientific and artistic creativity.
