Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am an elementary music teacher in a dangerous and economically-depressed urban neighborhood in New York. The neighborhood is plagued by crime, gang violence, and the difficult social issues that accompany teaching in an impoverished area. I consciously came to teach at my elementary school, because I wanted to make a difference with students who really needed it. I wanted to contribute my time & talents to communities that are often passed up by good teachers, because the circumstances and environment are not desirable. I wanted to help uplift this community of young people by encouraging them to dream big, teaching them goal setting & critical thinking skills and providing them with a rigorous and meaningful education. My beautiful & talented students come from Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, Poland & Yemen. They are bursting with potential, but need extra help to improve their literacy skills. During my time, I have created an After-School Music chorus and the school's first general music program. Although I am the music teacher, I also teach academic intervention for 2nd grade students 7 periods a week. Right now I am teaching my students phonics (letter knowledge, letter sounds, vowels, word families, patterns & rhymes). Developing my students phonics skills will make them stronger in writing, verbally expressing themselves, reading and reading comprehension. Most of my students are English language learners. An effective way for teaching them phonics is to give them lots of opportunities for hands on learning with lots of visuals. My projects needs a variety of phonics learning kits that provide hands on learning for my students. We will use these materials in our daily morning sessions on phonics. As a donor, you can play a vital role in the lives of my students, by providing these learning tools that will strengthen their literacy skills. Your donation will impact my students throughout their lives.
