Ms. Wendy Grout Elementary School
Portland, OR Grades PreK-2

Teaching kindergarten in an inner-city, low income, pre-K-8 school can obviously come with a few challenges. Students range in age from 4 to 14 yrs old and come from so many different places. Our ELL population continues to grow, as does the population of students who are in foster care, students on public assistance, and students involved with gang activity. I have several kindergarteners with severe emotional disorders and a variety of special needs.

What really gets me down though, is not having the administrative support. Early childhood should be respected and valued, and seen as an incredibly opportune time to consider options for early intervention. Unfortunately, early childhood is overlooked in a number of ways. Student referrals for additional services are often met with a comment like "Well, they are awfully young," and research showing the predictive accuracy of early referrals is seemingly ignored. This has been the case with classroom materials as well. Students are expected to do so much more (reading at 4?) with so much less!

We have 2 labs in our building and they are booked. Even when they aren't full, kindergarten is not allowed to utilize the technological equipment. Classrooms now have computers through various resources, but not pre-k or kindergarten! If we have computers, it is only because we snagged what was being thrown out (Macs about 15 years old) and had helpful parents re-program them. I had none for most of this year and when I asked for some, I got beautiful, fast, functional laptops with fun games and good sound...oh the kids were excited. Until, about 2 days later when I was told there was no way kindergarten would have laptops! Then they were gone! Kindergarteners are underestimated! They really responded to the laptops with respect and awe. They intuitively knew these were going to require care and that they were not "for throwing or hitting" as one concerned adult mentioned as the laptops were removed from my room!

Please, help me tell these kids that they are worth it and they can be trusted. Let me show these adults how wrong they were and how disrespectful their actions are. My students need to have the same technological foundation that any successful student should have in this day and age! Young children are my passion and technology is a part of our world...I need to share that with them. One laptop will at least help us do group writing of poems, research various thematic topics online, play literacy and math games, and develop fine motor and eye-hand-coordination skills. Most of all, it will tell my 27 kiddos that they ARE capable and worthy of the latest greatest anything!
