Wiggly, Toothless, Military Kids Need a Carpet

My project needs 1 classroom carpet for our class meeting area so that each child will have their own colorful place to sit and learn.

Our hardworking military families need your help! My classroom is a second grade classroom in California. Yes, these kids are the wonderful ages of seven and eight where the smiles are frequent and are often missing those front teeth! Our students are all from military families. Many kids have a parent currently overseas (often in Iraq). We are a low income school and have limited funds for classroom supplies.

As a second grade classroom, we spend a good portion of our time in class meetings or group discussions. Here we work on our community, reading, writing, and math. This is a wonderful interactive time where students share their ideas, and I guide their learning. Our learning really comes alive as stories of loose teeth and misbehaving puppies are interwoven with the nitty-gritty work of education. Unfortunately, we have a very small space for this meeting area, and we have borrowed a very old carpet to sit on. Our current carpet is an ancient, wool, Persian style rug with fringe. Students do their best to find a comfortable place and not bother their neighbors, but often they end up wiggling into each other’s spots. Wonderful learning and discussions get side tracked by conflicts about where each person should be. Other students get “lost in the fringe or pattern on the rug”. The worse problem is that the carpet is starting to fall apart. Students are finding strings to pull out. On top of all of this, I worry about the kids with allergies. All the fuzz and the strings and the wool and dirt can’t be too good for these kids.

I am asking for a new colorful carpet where each child will have their own special space to learn. The students will love this new carpet with its simple colors where everyone will have their individual place. Transitions from our chairs to the carpet will be smoother and more organized as everyone will have their own unique place to sit. Finally, our environment will be cleaner and healthier
