Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 5th grade at a Title I school in California. My students need an opportunity to develop the critical thinking skills needed to be a citizen in our interconnected world.

So much of the time world events are out of reach for many of my students, and the only place they can access the information needed to make informed decisions is from the TV. This bias needs to be countered with alternative sources of information that can be trusted.

These two student centered magazines will allow all my students access to the news in a new way. They will help my students develop their critical thinking skills and to compare what they hear to what they read--kind of like what we do as adults on a daily basis. Too often we bring news into the classroom that is at a higher reading level than the students can absorb. This resource will allow my students access to the most updated news and ideas which will bring them into the adult world with an ability to improve their critical thinking skills.

This donation will really allow my students access to information and ideas that they can only dream of, and will make them read and think more like responsible human beings.
