I teach computers and remedial reading. I want to use these books to create a fantasy reading land in the lab to encourage reading. At present I have no books. I have some softcovers coming but no hardcovers. Reading is the number one way to change a student's self-esteem and dreams.
Books open the doorway to new worlds. The students in my class have all poor low income households. They need desperately to both learn to read and escape and also raise their test scores. Students have an extremely small library and the books are on average over 25 years old. The building is over 50 years old with little renovation.
The 47 books I am requesting would allow the class to check a book in and out of class. They would do reports on them in PowerPoint for their classmates. They in turn would be encouraging other students to read those same books. Placing a new or almost new book in the children's hands will give a positive change to each child. They love new and exciting books. They love telling me about what they are reading.
It is my hope that these books can make a huge difference in the lives of my students. Reading is the key to empowerment and great success in these children's lifetimes. They use reading to achieve better careers and better home lives!
