Ms. Bauer Iles School
Springfield, IL Grades 3-5

My fourth grade classroom is one of two fourth grades in a public school magnet for academically talented children. Our focus is to provide opportunities for children that meet their needs. The school has a 30% free and reduced lunch rate, and it includes children from many ethnicities - 21 different languages are spoken in their homes. 99+% of our students meet the state's standards. With this bounty of talent comes a lack of Federal funding which is typically intended for those who do not meet standards. We work hard to obtain technology, books and other supplies because of this. Our classrooms are organized into states grouped together and called the USE (United States of Enlightenment). In the USE students receive paychecks and pay bills each month from their checking accounts. We work together as a country that incorporates democratic principles, and we learn about the capitalistic system by opening businesses and selling "creatively-made" products at Market Day. It helps that the students work above grade level because they are able to process all of this and to "go further." Working together, producing many products, and studying the United States during the year lend themselves to a strong social studies program. So, during the fourth quarter of each year we study our heritage. Each student chooses his native country or one in his ancestry to study and share with others. As a result of the research, many projects are creatively produced. In fact, the research culminates in a festival where the students bake or cook one recipe of their chosen country to share with each other and the rest of the school. However, the food is not given away, it is sold for USE money. (The more money you obtain, the more you have for the silent auction at the end of the year!) Previously, all creative projects have been 2-dimensional placed on a mounting board, or 3-dimensional models. I would like to incorporate video technology into this year's presentations. A digital camcorder would be used by each student to record an explanation of his ancestral country. This clip would be included in an iMovie, perhaps of all Irish or German or Kenyan peoples, or Keynote multimedia presentation which the student(s) would create. These would be burned to DVD's and presented to the students as a memory, as well as to provide documentation for my program. Does the school not already have a digital camcorder? Well, yes, there is one in the office that is about three years old. It is cumbersome and does not have today's new editing techniques. The battery needs to be constantly charged, and, personally, I would rather use my own digital camera than that old camcorder. Being funded for a new digital camcorder would be a wonderful addition to our classroom and increase the technological savvy of our students! Both classrooms of children (50) would benefit.
