Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Amazing fourth graders struggling to reach their goals. My fourth grade students are in a low socio-economic area. Our school does not have a great amount of money to supply extra book sets and CDs to supplement the children's' learning. I teach in a self-contained classroom, meaning that I cover all the subjects in a day. My fourth grades work hard to improve themselves each day.

Most of the students in my class are struggling readers. Many of them desperately want to become better readers. They really want to read the same books that students reading at or above grade level are reading, but they don't have access to these materials. As readers, they get discouraged having to read the same Junie B. Jones, Horrible Harry, and Frog and Toad books over and over again.

By making available the core literature books with accompanying CDs and CD players, my struggling readers will have access to the grade level and above grade level books they are interested in. They will be able to participate in book talks. Their reading comprehension and levels will soar to new heights. In my heart, I know it will give many of them a love for reading they didn't know they had.

Your help will ensure that my students will have access to more literature at higher levels. They will feel more confidence in themselves, since they can "read" the same books as the higher readers.
