Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach in a rural community in the High Desert. Most of our students live on dirt roads and share homes with other families. Many have never left the high desert. Our school population over the past 2 years has changed from 5% low income to 37% students receiving free or reduced lunches. The students we now receive has very little back ground knowledge of number sense and how to manipulate numbers. My class consists of 20 students- 70% are English Language learners, 50% are on free/reduced lunch, and 80% are far below basic on the California Standards test for mathematics.

This summer I was privileged to be able to attend a 5 day workshop on Cognitive Guided Instruction- or what we call- Children's Good Ideas. Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) is a professional development program that increases teachers’ understanding of the knowledge that students bring to the math learning process and how they connect that knowledge with formal concepts and operations. CGI is guided by two major theses. The first is that children bring an intuitive knowledge of mathematics to school with them and that this knowledge should serve as the basis for developing formal mathematics instruction in primary school. This thesis leads to an emphasis on assessing the processes that students use to solve problems. The second thesis is that math instruction should be based on the relationship between computational skills and problem solving, which leads to an emphasis on problem solving in the classroom instead of the repetition of number facts (e.g., practicing the rules of addition and subtraction). What it means in my classroom is that children are excited about mathematics!

Our society needs problem solvers. People who can think about a situation and find multiple ways to solve the problem. That is what CGI empowers students to do. CGI encourages students to develop their own solutions to real life math problems (i.e., 4 Children want to share 10 cupcakes so that each child gets the same amount. Show how much one child can have.) Children then share their thinking with the class. In essence, students are learning from each other and developing their own understanding of the algorithms that we try to teach them with no understanding. In order to do this, I need manipulatives in my classroom for students to use. I have requested a classroom manipulative hands on set as well as 20 individual counting frames for students to keep at their desks.

Your help in purchasing these items will ensure that my students have the hands on items they need to solve real life problems. My goal is to develop mathematical thinkers that can solve problems NOT memorize algorithms. This is what our society needs- thinkers and problem solvers.
