Do The Work Of Commander Kirk

My students need 5 bottle rocket kits, 1 copy of, "Rokit Experiment Book", one copy of "Exploratopia", and one Linda Poore Space kit.

The students you will be helping are high-need, at-risk gifted 5th and 6th grade students in the heart of the Mississippi Delta, a critical needs area. These young men and women have the intellectual potential to reach for the stars and accomplish great things. But most of them are living below the poverty level and cannot afford the luxury of new, high quality learning materials.

These young men and women are hungry for mentally stimulating learning opportunities and they are quite interested in science. They have been using our one, older, student computer as well as our somewhat outdated and limited print resources in order to investigate the solar system and learn about space exploration. The idea of building rockets was discussed and the students were very excited at the prospect. Unfortunately, we found that the materials for the bottle rockets we initially wanted to use were too expensive and therefore out of reach. (Most of the supplies and materials we use are bought out of my own pocket which greatly limits the hands-on learning experiences I can provide for my students.)

We need the new print resources, the experimental resources, and the actual rocket building materials. I believe that if they could have this learning opportunity, it may very well ignite the spark that would propel them into the world of learning and away from gangs and futility.

With your help, my students will have the stimulating hands-on materials that will allow them to experience the excitement of science first hand. In a sense, they will be able to do the work of Commander Kirk. That is, explore space. Please help me set the stage for learning excitement that will open the door of success and may very well translate into productive, prosperous contributing adults.
