I have taught English to inner-city students in Chicago for six years. This is a very good general admission high school that has just started offering a few upper level elective courses such as the class I now teach, Film Studies. In its first year, the course has attracted two sections, over 55 students, to the study of film. I've showed movies that the kids, on their own, would never go and see or rent or would have heard of. It really opened their eyes that a movie can have action without shooting or explosives. They are beginning to notice and appreciate the subtle cinematography, editing, and direction that make films great.

I took over this class in its first year from a teacher who left the school. Immediately, I felt a surge of excitement at the thought of teaching high school students about the nuances of analyzing and creating film. On the first day, I was met by a group of students wanting to watch movies that they had known. At first, I floundered with too much work from the textbook and not enough student involvement. I could feel the class energy drain. Once I opened up the possibility of actually creating our own short films, every concept and term we learned took on new importance. "This is something I will want to know when creating my own film," they would say. The one of the problem I face now, however, is creating these films without a digital camcorder is impossible. There is so much potential for this class and these students to create great media. This would be the first step in reaching that goal.

With the right equipment (digital camcorders, computers with editing equipment), my students will be empowered to create their own stories, told in a medium they have seen their whole lives. And while they have seen many movies, before this class, they have no idea what it takes to create them. This type of experience could open many possibilities to my students. Even for those students who don't pursue a career in film, success in this class and in this project could empower them to continue their studies after high school.

With your help, this class can be more than just one more credit towards graduating high school. It can be a meaningful, empowering experience that my students will never forget. This project will engage students of all backgrounds and interests to create something that they can be proud of.
