Kicking it up an i-notch! I am a middle school IB science teacher in an inner city/urban school system. My school is diverse and has a significant portion of students on free/reduced lunch. My students are bright but can sometimes be less than motivated by the traditional methods of teaching science. They need challenges and projects that stretch their capabilities.

One day, I caught a student with an i-pod during my class. I knew what an i-pod was but like many other adults, had not used one. He said he was sorry, he had just gotten it for his birthday. I promised him I would allow his parent to pick it up after school that day instead of keeping it for an extended period of time if he showed me how it worked. It had video, music and text! I was hooked!

He explained further that these "podcasts and videos" could be created and downloaded to any i-pod. Could I use this? Podcasting would be a great technology to use in the classroom. The first podcast I would like my class to complete is a virtual field trip of the James River and its geological and biological treasures. Next, I would have students create podcasts for class projects, perhaps a commercial on agricultural products of the region, a crime scene recreation, or an interview with a local scientist to share with students etc. The ideas our endless.

Your help will bring this project "i-live." My students are excited about creating podcasts and sharing their podcasts. Your donation will bring our class into the 21st century. These students are bright and ingenious. Their limits shouldn't be defined solely by what the district can provide. This is why your help is strongly needed.
