Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a biology course to 9th graders at a public school for gifted New York City students.

I would like to motivate my students' interest by instilling in them a genuine sense of scientific inquiry, and connecting this to the biological concepts of the course. My daily lessons would be greatly enriched through quantitative real-time demonstrations of biological phenomena. However, in a typical packed NY City classroom, providing a meaningful demonstration to the entire class is difficult because of space and seating arrangements.

A digital projection system that displays the real-time experimental results through a computer system is ideal for effectively reaching all of the students. We already have available to us a computer-controlled interface to conduct experiments, such as monitoring aerobic respiration, production of green house gases, or following the course of an enzyme reaction. The projector will allow me to transfer the experimental significance from a small computer screen to a large class screen. The projector will also allow me to introduce the students to computer simulations of experiments not normally suitable for the high school environment, such as studies involving radioactive nucleotides, virus replication, and large scale population dynamics. Lastly, the availability of a projector in our Internet-enabled classroom will facilitate the class-discovery of professional research grade internet resources related to bioinformatics and the human genome.

Your donation will deliver the tools my students need to more meaningfully connect to the subject.
