Ms. P. Okmulgee High School
Okmulgee, OK Grades 9-12

I teach information literacy, research, author studies, book studies, print and technology literacy and help with anything else that a student may need in regard to writing, reading and presenting at the high school level. We have 9th through 12th grade students at this site with a high mobility rate among students and a high number of minority students. Generally speaking, all students want to be prepared for college and to be successful.

Part of the Oklahoma PASS objectives for learner outcomes calls for students to seek, evaluate, synthesize and present information from various sources, using various formats. One format is video photography and the library does not have a camera for circulation (for check out to teachers or student groups). Furthermore, there are a lot of school programs/activities that should be recorded and archived for posterity. If any photographing is done, it is done with personal cameras. Just in the month of November, we had a Veteran’s Day program and a National Honor Society program that went unrecorded. The sports teams own the only video cameras in the school and they do not circulate to the other teachers. Since we have over 500 students, it would be extremely helpful for the library to have a camera for circulation to the entire faculty and for school sponsored activities, like cheerleading competitions, parades, field trips, presentations, practice interviews for the careers class, and any other school or classroom project. We also fail to record classroom projects and presentations that could be used in portfolios. The camera could be used for so many different projects and activities.

As stated above, a video camera would empower our teachers and students in classroom projects and in activities that are in the community. We have a leadership class that does community service all the time. Our local newspaper picks up a lot of these but not enough. We had a Homecoming and Christmas parade in which the band, cheerleaders, athletes and other students groups participated, but only personal cameras were on the scene. The careers, business and special education classes could be building educational portfolios. The yearbook camera can’t be everywhere all the time therefore the library owned camera could be on those trips and excursions to record and archive those events. When a special education class does a presentation, the cameras could be on site, being used by that teacher to record the event. Coming up events such as Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Black Heritage Month are deeply cultural here and need to videoed. With the library holding the equipment, over 50 teachers have access to them and it makes fiduciary sense for the donors to know that the equipment will be available for all faculty and school sponsored activities.

Your help to purchase a video recorder for the library will ensure that teachers and student groups can record activities and events in their school lives for posterity. It will provide an excellent avenue with which students can pursue normal activities with an added dimension and an added resource for information retrieval and presentation. When we record students, they feel that the activity must be important enough for recording and that THEY are important enough to record.
