Cinema literarcy is long overdue in education. Our school is on the right path for giving the students opportunities for enhancing their academic and creative skills through analyzing and producing films. By creating various projects, the students will learn film analysis, directing, script writing, editing, and production. They will experience the process involved in creating short films, designing instructional videos, and filming a theatrical production from initial concept to final stages. This course is not leveled; all students with varying abilities can register. My learning disabled students who are in the remedial language courses are working with my Advanced Placement students. Students who excel in technology are working with students who have never used a camcorder. Students who have been in the Drama department are helping those students who have never presented in front of a group. Everyone contributes.

What do you have when a room includes a green bed sheet, a flea market lamp, a six-year old camcorder (donated by my mother), a microphone tied to a stick, and outdated editing software? My Film Analysis and Production course! Students are learning film analysis, directing, script writing, editing, and production. The classroom has space for a studio; however, I do not have proper equipment. Students deserve the opportunity for a creative outlet, enhance academic skills, and broaden career plans through film production. The students are always motivated and coming up with innovative ideas for creating films; however, many times these ideas cannot be accomplished or must be “cut” dramatically to realistically match the resources needed for these projects.

The project that we currently want to complete is Dance for Film. We have been asked by the dancing Instructor at our school to film her dancers with a Film Noir style. The film will be presented on a large screen while the student orchestra plays a specific piece. The presentation of film, dance, and music will be presented to the community. Before the project begins, I have noticed how the limited equipment will cause us many problems with trying to capture the dances using creative film angles, the issues with lighting, and the limitations of the videoediting software. The production teams will present during a class viewing of the Film Noir Dance films and will give a brief presentation of their artistic decisions, as well as answer questions that the other students might have about their films. Every student will have an evaluation sheet and give constructive feedback for each project. List of objectives for the Dance for Film project: •Understand how different camera techniques capture the mood of specific dance movements-specifically Film Noir •Learn to use technology as an artistic medium and appreciate how multimedia can enhance the artistic experience

Your help will ensure that my students are able to accomplish their goals in creating their own films. For many students, film production will be a career choice and these projects will help prepare them for their future. For the students who want to create film for “fun” will be given the opportunities to find another avenue for creativity-not everyone is a writer, a painter, or musician. And another important point is that these film projects DO enhance academic knowledge and critical thinking skills. These crossover projects benefit all the students, not just the film students. And most importantly, these projects give the students to work together and focus on achieving the same goal. Not all groups work so flawlessly together, but the difficult experiences will help them deal with obstacles and become better at their interpersonal skills. Having the proper resources and equipment will be very beneficial.
