In my classroom, my students don't just study the subjects of History and Geography, they open up a window to the whole world on a daily basis. In my classes we do investigations, we keep up with current events and we challenge ourselves to think critically about everything we learn.
My school is in an urban setting with high numbers of students of low socioeconomic status.
We also serve large populations of students for whom English is a second language, or who are classified as special education. Our school is ethnically diverse and many of our students will be the first in their families to go to college.
My classes are extremely diverse as well. They are representational of the student body at large. I teach several sections of an AP Human Geography class that is open access. I have English language learners as well as special education students in this class, as well as many students who had never imaged taking an Advanced Placement course before they enrolled in mine.
In my United States History class, 1/3 of the students that I serve are designated as special education and have individualized education plans. I also serve a group of AVID students- who are attempting to be the first in their families to attend college.
My Project
My students will get a lot of use from this laptop in our classroom. On a daily basis they will be able to use it to conduct research, access primary source materials, follow breaking news, and use Google Earth and Google Maps to explore sites around the world. They will also get to use the computer to complete assignments and projects.
Many of my students do not have access to computers or the Internet at home. This can create roadblocks from them in terms of completing assignments. Their imagination and creativity can become stifled by their lack of technology. This computer will help them to access a broader world and complete assignments in a way that will let them fully express themselves. In particular, I am designing a project where my students will be doing research in our city and creating a thematic atlas based on their findings. I want to publish this atlas to show them that their voice matters. Access to computers has been stumbling block to this point.
Donations to this project will impact my students greatly.
They will have access to a brand new computer hooked up to our school's high speed Internet and my classroom printer. This will really increase the level of connectivity for my students who do not have internet access at home. All students will be able to use the computer to do research and complete assignments. This will really improve my classroom and my students' lives.
