Imagine sitting in a room for hours a day with dreary walls and concrete pillars. Students spend forty hours a week or more in classrooms that often have very little to make it warm, inviting and motivational. We spend so much decorating our homes and the outside of schools with no budget for walls!
My students are ranging in ages from 13-19 and most of them are surrounded by concrete blocks for safety at school.
Because of the nature of hurricanes in the region, most of the school has to be built to protect. The walls for the most part are concrete, white and bland. My room has a huge hall that students have to walk down. Dreary and white, it doesn't call out "come on in!" I want to change that and make the room more interesting and inviting. Our students need and require support and motivation, I am working with many at risk students and I want to provide a warm and engaging room for these young people, many who will stay with me for the next four years.
My Project
Students will enjoy going into a room with posters and pictures and quotes. Movies are a wonderful way to talk about issues in society and the history that is portrayed in them. Posters of Hollywood movies will interest students in the time periods and it will also encourage students to go outside of their usual zone and investigate what older cinema and films can teach them. I teach current issues in the law and history of the United States and government. Having a cheerful, inspiring poster with positive quotes will sink into the students as they are exposed to these daily. I also want to display photos of our students participating in Mock Trial, Youth in Government, Volunteering and Law Day to inspire students in my class to get involved.
A classroom that is interesting and eye-catching is going to be a more positive learning environment for students.
Having motivational and movie posters will spark their interest and hopefully send a repetitive positive message as they are exposed to these images. A fun, cheerful classroom sends a message to the students you matter and we care about you. This class is inviting and interesting and you can learn here. You can make the difference in my classroom.
