Enhance not supplant classroom learning for second grade students through place based learning and technology.

Second grade years are crucial in the development of literacy, social skills, fine motor skills and developing a love for life long learning! Students today need a variety of modes of presentation to include place based learning, hands on technology and direct instruction. Combine those modes of instruction and help set students up for success as life long learners!

Students in my classroom need 4 laptop computers to integrate a variety of learning styles and modes of instruction. Instruction using a variety of modes such as place based learning, which is taking students out into the community in which they live; bringing the community into the classroom; digital pictures of these experiences placed on the computer to help them create their own stories based upon these real life experiences help students to connect these experiences in a meaningful way. The technology allows for students experiences to be used to create coloring books, story books, and class library books. Supporting literacy instruction by using known phonics based programs/cd's to help support and enhance learning so that students needs are addressed in a variety of formats which include Guided Reading, Shared Reading, Interactive Writing as well as computer based phonics and literacy support. Test/Reading scores support increase in scores/levels of students learning through various means of instruction. Our school test students using computer laptops. In order for students to be successful on these assessments, students need to be familiar with the tools that they use.
