Math Literacy For All

My students need a class subscription to MATH magazine from Scholastic in order to connect math class to the real world, and to build their literacy skills.

My Students

Oftentimes when my students see story problems or have to read in my math class, I hear a collective groan. My students are ready to seize their potential, but they often have a hard time seeing real world applications in math. We need to change our mindset about math!

We are part of a large, rural high school where many of our students are performing below grade level, not through any fault of their own, but because they have attended under-resourced schools in a cash-strapped school district for their entire lives.

Despite these setbacks, our high schoolers want to get on track AND get to college.

My Project

Our school has a two-pronged mission: To push literacy across the curriculum and to "grow" all of our students' math skills at least two grade levels in one school year. This is a tall order, but with a resource like Scholastic's Math magazine, students will be able to build literacy skills, improve their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, and be able to make real world connections for what often seems like an abstract subject. Students can read, explore, experiment, and build with this high-quality resource, and it can be shared across all grade levels, in all classrooms!

For our students, a good education might be the only bridge to changing their life outcomes, and in a world where the needs for science, engineering, technology, and math are at an all-time high, there is no greater gift we can give than access to these careers and skills.
