Mrs. Potter Fisher Elementary School
Oklahoma City, OK Grades 3-5

I teach gifted education for grades 3-6 and have 97 students. My role as a teacher of gifted students is to challenge them creatively and intellectually. At times, finding innovative and original ways to design new curriculum that captures the imagination of our smartest and brightest students continues to even challenge me. I spend several hours each day searching the Internet, reading books, and creating new lessons from the ideas I get from my research. I also have to purchase most of the materials needed for my program. Last year each teacher at my school was given $200.00 to spend on curriculum materials and I was only given $50.00. This did not even begin to cover the expense of research related books and classroom materials.

My pupils are very enamored with the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie, so this year I created a pirate unit. They built their own treasure box and period “pocket book” journals to record pirate talk. They participated in an on-line research scavenger hunt and converted different denominations of money to British pounds. To reinforce the concept of measurement, they took part in a “measure hunt”. During the lesson, they recorded the measurements of the famous Greek statue of Alexander the Great and converted centimeters to millimeters. They calculated ratios, found the averages and compared the results to the Golden Ratio. As an extension, they used the same skills to see whose face was the closest to the Golden Ratio. Currently the students are researching different aspects of pirate life to create a PowerPoint presentation and a living pirate museum.

The Internet is a wonderful tool, but it cannot replace a good book. Children need to learn to do research using a variety of materials. Our library is very small and inadequate. There are only four books on pirates that are available and two of them are fiction stories. The books that are purchased will serve as research tools for 97 gifted education students. Several teachers have already expressed an interest in borrowing pirate materials to integrate into their classroom curriculum. We will gladly share with any interested students or teachers within our school or district gifted program.

It is amazing that there are so many individuals who are interested in directly helping our classrooms. Any help to purchase pirate research books would be immensely appreciated by both myself and my students. You will make it possible for my students to not only gain insight in completing research, but also in developing a model of a pirate museum similar to the New England Pirate Museum. Projects such as this nurture their creativity and reinforce learning. Students use higher level thinking skills as well as research, planning and performance skills that will be useful for the rest of their lives. Thank you for taking an interest in our project.
