Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am lucky enough to be in a school of avid readers! To feed this love of reading, I want to have our 4th through 8th graders compete in the district wide Battle of the Books.

Our school has a diverse population of the students which includes bilingual, gifted, special needs, and impoverished children.

One thing that these students all have in common is their love of reading. Being the librarian, I get to see that love first hand. If they are on able to check out books when they come into the library due to time constraints or forgetting their book from the previous week, they let me know that they are disappointed! Being an International Baccalaureate school, our students are well versed in the profiles that best represent themselves. Whether it be Caring, Inquirer, Knowledgeable, Risk Taker, Thinker, Communicator, Open-Minded, Principled, Balanced, or Reflective, they see it in their own actions and the actions of the community that surrounds them.

My Project

The books that I have requested have been chosen by the Department of Libraries for this year's Battle of the Books. Two different teams comprised of 4th-6th and 7th-8th graders will share in reading all of the books on the lists. Multiple students will read the same book, which will lead to a discussion on the book and deeper understand and appreciation. Every school that signs up for the contest competes in an online round of the Battle of the Books to see who will qualify for the in person, head to head Battle! It is very exciting for the students and they need to work together (across grade levels) to answer the various questions about the books. In addition, the students excitement about the books leads them to recommend the titles to their classmates. Since I read many of the books along side them, it aides in my Readers' advisory abilities as well. Over all, the Battle of the Books opens our students up to new titles and genres that they might have otherwise missed.

The books from Battle of the Books end up being some of the most circulated in the library.

This is due to the fact that the students competing gain such an excitement for the books, that they recommend them to their friends and classmates. I also read the books, which allows for me to put them in the hands of the kids who will love them. Battle of the Books opens our students eyes to titles and genres that they might have missed otherwise!
