Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach third grade in an inner city elementary school in CA. I began as a Teach For America teacher three years ago and I am still trying to close the achievement gap. My school receives 100% government assistance for free lunch and offers $0 to teachers at the beginning of the school year for classroom set up. I cannot afford to pay for electronics because unfortunately, I am buying composition books, pencils, chapter books, etc.

My students are already behind because I teach in a very low income community and without a printer, they are not getting the practice that they deserve every night. It is very hard for me to expect that they are revisiting the materials after school when they are not given the materials to practice. I have even tried emailing to get around the situation, but most of my class does not have an email address.

Also, I need a printer for my classroom so my students will be able to print their research projects! Every month, my third graders complete a research project (Animal Report, Native American Exploration, etc.) and every month they don't get to see their papers because I have to grade them on the computers. It is not fair that they aren't given the resources that other students are given. These poor kids can't help that their families can't afford to print their reports. Having a printer will help my students by allowing me to print homework packets and worksheet in class and also allow them to see their research papers and hard work on real paper!

Your help will brighten my 8 year old students' faces when they get to see what their research papers actually look like. Please, make it easier for them to practice their times tables at night. Right now, my students have to leave their projects on the school computer and tell their parents about it. You will make it possible for my students to print out and share their work with the people who love them!
