Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"Olivia might be a little bit bad, but I would want to be her friend because she makes cool sandcastles and has so many fun clothes." "Does anyone else have a different opinion?" "I wouldn't want to be Olivia's friend. She doesn't listen to her parents and gets into lots of trouble. She shouldn't paint on the walls!" We all know that great books can spark great discussions about new perspectives and new ideas. In my kindergarten classroom we not only read fantastic books together, but we spend a lot of time talking about the books, the choices characters make and how our own opinions might be similar to or different than the author or other people in our class. Examining texts closely with young learners (through a teaching technique called "Interactive Read Alouds") lays a foundation for analytical thinking skills and oral literacy. And talking about books fosters a love of books! My challenge is that many of my students would like to take these same stories home to read and discuss with their families. The kindergarten oral literacy program at my school includes high-quality children's picture books organized around four social issues. During the year we focus on developing critical literacy by exploring individualism, families, immigration, and voice/silence. I currently only have classroom copies of these books -- will you help my students extend these rich conversations to their parents and siblings? Your generosity will provide 30 quality children's books and a set of storage bins to keep them organized. Thank you for helping send great books - and great conversations -- home with my kindergarten students!
