"Never again!" is a phrase one often hears as a reaction to Hitler's Holocaust: the problem is, Genocide has happened again and continues in the Sudan. I teach High School English and have been approved to teach a Holocaust/Genocide course next school year. Certainly, empathy and tolerance are topics it is highly pertinent we as teachers instill in students. In our rural community there is much diversity, and the acceptance of difference is crucial as to avoid gangs and hate groups/cliques.

We must empower our students through knowledge about the atrocities that have occurred and continue to take place in our world in order to spur them to compassion and action. Often students are attracted to the topic of Genocide because of the atrocities, but we must teach them why the atrocities came about, their repercussions, and why they cannot continue...that they ARE continuing.

Facilitating students' learning by means of multiple resources will inspire them to DO SOMETHING to stop the tragedy being supported by other governments. They will refuse to idly stand by thinking they have no recourse. Students will practice research skills with these books of the holocaust and will become experts. They will create audio visual presentations to take outside of the classroom and will be inspired to begin service projects that will impact our community on a grand scale. They have the power to inspire change, and I want them to realize this through their learning and activities.

Be a part of this attempt to advocate for understanding and tolerance in our youth, and help to provide for a more peaceful tomorrow. Provide sources that allow students to personalize the horrors in our world that CAN be prevented in our future.
