Our school is a pre K-12 school located in rural Alaska. We are located in a community that does not have access to a public library, and parents seldom come to our school library to bring books into the home. Our classroom is a K-3 classroom, but we often spend time as learning buddies with the preschool.

Our kindergarten students often enter school without the communication skills necessary to be successful students. The goal of this request is to start an oral language buddy program between the preschool and K-3 classroom. This program can not be successful without help from a donor. Our K-3 class loves to work with the preschool students. There is almost a right of passage when the children are old enough to be in our kindergarten class so that they can now be considered "preschool tutors". The children are very excited about the prospect of this story telling program.

The resources for this project consist of a story telling set and story telling apron. This set comes with hard backed books and story telling characters that will stick to a felt board or story telling apron. The K-3 will become "experts" at reading the books included in this kit. They will practice retelling the stories which will help their story recall. The children will then partner with a preschool student as a preschool tutor and help them learn to retell the story.

By funding this project you will be helping our Prek-3 students have a successful school literacy experience. This early learning experience will benefit them throughout their K-12 experience.
