Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 1st grade at a fantastic urban school in a working class community. Nearly 100% of the students are on free or reduced lunch and most are English language learners. Nearly all of my students are native Spanish speakers. They are a great group of kids that are always eager to learn new things and share them with everyone they know.
Every year I am blessed with fabulous parents who want the best education possible for their children. They attend parent conferences and ask about their child's behavior. These parents are genuinely concerned about their child's academic future. However, most of my parents either speak very limited English or no English at all. Every year I struggle with how I can empower them to help their children learn to read. These parents feel frustrated that they can not better assist their children with learning the basic skills that they need to become proficient readers.
However, I have come up with an easy solution! Leap Frog has Family Literacy Packs that come with educational DVDs, Fridge Phonics magnetic kits, and letters that explain all of the great activities that parents can do with their child. One of the best parts of this plan is that the parents do not need to be fluent English speakers to help their children. For example, the magnetic Phonics kits simply stick onto the refrigerator and guide the student through the sounds. The other exciting aspect of this solution is that it will benefit the whole family. Most of my students have younger siblings who will no doubt be able to benefit from learning the alphabet and letter sounds in an exciting way with their older brother or sister or by themselves.
It would be extremely difficult financially for me to be able to provide these kinds of resources for my families. However, with a generous contribution from people who are concerned about education and helping families, I would be able to check these Literacy backpacks out on a regular basis to the students who would most benefit from them. The resources that I am requesting will allow me to give support to not only my students but their parents as well.
