Class Up Our Library With Award Winners, US Cellular!

My students need high-interest texts to hook them initially, and they need award-winning books to help them stretch their reading and writing abilities.

My Students

My students begin every class period by reading silently. We confer about their books, reading strategies, and goals. By the end of the year, I want them to become lifelong readers. To do that, I need to put amazing, varied books in their hands.

My students are a camouflaged bunch, coming to class every day in the basement of our hundred-year-old, run-down, rural school with smiles on their faces.

They are not Honors students, generally don't enjoy reading, and most do not want to go to college. However, they are hard workers who are willing to open their minds to the possibility of a future as a reader, learner, and scholar. If I can transform them into lifelong lovers of literacy, their lives will be enriched beyond their wildest imaginations as books will open doors they never thought to approach.

My Project

My curriculum consists solely of independent reading novels. While we do have a school library and a local public library, they do not often have the books I recommend to my students--award-winners, high-interest young adult literature, graphic novels, poetry anthologies, or literary nonfiction. As a result, it falls to me to provide these books to my students. With this grant, I will be able to help my students grow exponentially as readers on a daily basis by putting these excellent books into their hands.

This project will completely revolutionize my classroom.

Last year, US Cellular awarded me a grant consisting mostly of high-interest texts. Those books hooked my students as readers. This year, I'm asking for more difficult, complex, long, award-winning books. Those books will help them stretch their abilities and grow into sophisticated young readers.
