"I teach a group of high school juniors in a program called Advisory at a high-need urban public school. Our high school serves a community of African American and Latino students, most of whom, come from impoverished backgrounds.

My students come from a community facing poverty and violence. The advisory program at our high school aims to keep the students from dropping out and motivates them to attend college after graduation. It does so, through character building activities, and personalized academic skills support. I have been the adviser for this cohort since they were freshmen, and have witnessed them face many challenges and overcome them with courage and resiliency. Several of my students are eligible to attend a four year university upon graduation, and will be first generation college students if they are successful in their goals. Therefore, we are providing an intensive college prep curriculum through the advisory class.

In order to be prepared and competitive college candidates, my students need to take the SATs (Scholastic Aptitude Test) that is a college entrance requirement for many college around the country. My students do not have the privilege of enrolling in expensive private SAT prep programs, and will be studying for it on their own. I am requesting funding for a set of 20 SAT prep books that my students can use to prepare for the SATs. We will begin the preparation in our class and the students will continue it through their summer vacations until they take the SATs.

Your support will make it possible for my students to work toward their dream of attending a college in the future! hide»

My students need 20 copies of "The Official SAT Study Guide for the New SAT". details»

Dear Shilin, Jill, Maria, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Anonymous Donor,

My students and I are extremely grateful for your generous contribution toward our proposal. We received a class set of SAT prep books for our Junior Advisory program and are making good use of them. The students are highly motivated to become eligible college candidates and having the resource of SAT prep books provided to them is an amazing blessing.

Most of my students will be first generation college students. There are moments where college seems like an unattainable dream to them. However, our focus consistently remains on getting prepared for college so that it is a realistic option. Your gift has supported us in this effort. Providing equitable access to college for the underprivileged students, like the ones I work with, is a step toward bringing equity and security in our society. Thanks again for your support and help!

With gratitude,
Ms. M.

Dear Shilin, Jill, Maria, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Anonymous Donor,

My students and I are very grateful for your generous contribution toward helping the students become prepared for college.  We will use these SAT prep books in a study group so that juniors at our school can prepare to take this competitive and rigorous exam.  Nearly all the students will be first generation college candidates, so your help in funding a resource that can help them get into college is extremely valuable.  We appreciate your thoughtful support and kindness!

With gratitude,
Ms. M.
