Completed:Need Digitial Cameras for Newspaper/Website Project
"I teach 7th-grade social studies in an alternative middle school academy in an inner-city high school. Many of our students live in poverty and seem to feel disconnected from the community in which they live. Additionally, many of our 7th graders only read at a 3rd-grade level.

In a project with the dual goal of fostering community connections and improving students' literacy skills, my colleagues and I are working with volunteers from local media organizations to develop a student-produced newspaper and website. These media projects will allow our students to document their classroom activities and achievements. Students will learn about and report on events in their school and community while working with teachers and volunteers to improve their writing skills.
Our school provides most of the equipment we will need to get this project up and running, but we would like our students to be able to document their achievements and other news events in photographs, as well as words. After all, as our students point out, newspapers and websites would be boring without photographs! Unfortunately, our school does not have money in its budget to purchase a digital camera for our program.
Your support will make our newspaper and website program a success, allowing our students to participate in all aspects of the news gathering and production processes while improving their literacy skills.
My program needs a digital camera for a student-produced newspaper and website.

Dear Elizabeth, jerry, Nancy and Anonymous Donor,
Thank you so much for your generous contribution. It means so much to my kids to know that there are people out there that truly care about them. I will use this camera to start a student newspaper and website as well as document field studies that our students will be taking. You can check out my blog for updates on my student's progress. Thanks once again for making a difference.
