Tell me, I will forget. Show me, I may remember. Involve me, and I will understand. These words ring so true when teaching mathematics. As an eighth grade math teacher in a rural middle school I want to provide exercises where my 65 algebra and prealgebra students are active participants involved in creating, organizing and displaying mathematical information with hands on activities...not just drill and written problems. I truly believe that creativity fosters problem solving. Even simple everyday problem solving. By providing classroom tools of colorful papers, a long arm stapler and a paper trimmer, the students can "strut their stuff" and show off their creativity by creating folded organizers ( AKA foldables) like mini books, pamphlets, small posters and charts showing skills, principals and knowledge they have learned in class. I teach them not only math, but presentation skills and I want them to experience pride. Of course, everyday notebook paper and scissors can be used, but students find colored paper fascinating and motivational. (and notes on colored paper are lost less frequently.) I am given an allowance of paper but only white paper. I strive to create fun and interesting ways of learning math. The funding of these materials would be greatly appreciated not only by myself but by 65 smiling faces!
