"This proposal is for equipment and supplies for a chemistry demonstration called "Tusk Paste - Toothpaste for Elephants". It demonstrates exothermic, chemical reactions and the function of a catalyst. I saw this demonstrated at The Discovery Place in Charlotte, North Carolina and knew I wanted to do this for my students. The reaction seems simple. Three liquids (liquid detergent, hydrogen peroxide and potassium iodide) were placed in a large graduated cylinder, but it results in an incredible, thick white foam that gushes gently out of the top of the cylindar. It releases heat and produces a new substance(the foam). The reaction lasts for several minutes and is visually impressive - all great characteristics for our visual middle schoolers. This demonstration would be an awesome way to demonstrate exothermic chemical reactions to my 7th grade science students.

The North Carolina Standard Course of Study requires that 7th graders study the properties of matter including chemical reactions. Due to safety concerns at our school, exothermic reactions which release heat, cannot be done by individual students in a lab setting. This demonstration is a visually impressive way to show students what's happening in an exothermic reaction in a safe way.

Materials needed for this demontration include a 500 mL glass, graduated cylindar, liquid detergent, hydrogen peroxide, potassium iodide and gloves.

Mill Creek Middle is located in a rural, farming community about 1 hour west of Charlotte, NC. Many students have never been to Discovery Place to see science close up and hands on. This demonstration brings the experience to them and allows them to see, to understand and to remember.

The cost of soap from Quill Corporation, and chemicals, a graduated cylinder, and a box of latex gloves from Carolina Biological Company is $143, including shipping and fulfillment ?.

Ms. L. sent this note after the project was fully funded:

Dec 24, 2004
Dear Steven,
Thank you so much for funding my proposal for "Tusk Paste". I logged into my school email Christmas Eve after Santa left just to see if anything interesting had popped up since school let out. My jaw dropped when I saw the email from Donors Choose that the proposal had been funded. What a gift. Thank you.

This will start the New Year’s chemistry unit off with a bang. My 7th graders are just beginning chemical reactions and this demonstration will be awesome. Thank you again. I can't wait to get going!

Sincerely,
Stacy L
